WHAT IS FOOD ENGINEERING?

Have you ever looked at processed food and wondered how it was designed? I know I have!  Once I was looking at food coloring and wondering about it.  How much food coloring is in the everyday foods that we consume without even thinking twice about it? Food engineering is one of the most engaging parts of the food industry. It involves manufacturing, food processing, and food designing in food science.

Food engineering includes the engineering, of course, advanced food chemistry, processing, math skills, microbiology, and design. A food engineer creates convenient foods that are also safe, sustainable, and environmentally friendly. Food engineers are currently researching sterilization and pasteurization, electricity with biomaterials, edible films, sealing methods, shelf life, and food production for NASA.

In my career research, I discovered some of the careers in food engineering:  Food machinery, instrumentation, processing, ingredient manufacturing, and packing. Food engineers are often hired in government agencies, consulting, processing plants, pharmaceuticals, and health care. Well, that is a pretty broad career area!
