What is Microbiology in Food Science?
Have you ever wondered what microbiology is and why it is so important to the food industry? I’ve been asking myself questions about microbiology for a while, so I thought I’d look into it. After researching for a while, I soon learned that microbiology is one of the most scientifically interesting parts of food science!
Overall, Microbiology is the study of microorganisms; but in food science it is the study of how and why microorganisms develop in food. Microbiology also deals with how they react in different environments and in different types of food. A microbiologist studies different foods, environments, microorganisms, and bacteria that may cause a potential growth of a disease. Microbiologists research and analyze the development of certain microorganisms, through this they find ways to control any developed bacteria found in foods to prevent illnesses. They also study why microorganisms cause someone to become sick. Microbiologists often come up with new ways to manage and preserve foods so there isn't any growth of unhealthy bacteria. There is so much involved in their field!
This is a very important part of food safety and science. They are often hired by government industires, academic institutions, food processing industries, trade associations, analytical laboratories, and organizations.
